A man accused of pointing a firearm in the shooting that left three-year-old Luke Tibbetts dead has been denied bail by the Newlands Magistrates’ Court in Johannesburg.

“It is not in the interest of justice for the accused to be released on bail,” Magistrate Elmarie Engelbrecht said today.

Wearing a black jacket and jeans, Keenan Mokwena (28) looked down during most of the proceedings and occasionally glanced at local residents in the public gallery.

“If the accused is released on bail, there will be a public outcry,” Engelbrecht said.

The matter was postponed to September 3.

Mokwena was wounded during the shooting in Westbury, Johannesburg, on August 2.

He and Tibbetts were travelling in the area in different cars when they were hit by stray bullets. Mokwena was shot in his right arm.

Tibbetts was critically wounded, placed on life support and died in hospital on August 8.

Lindray Khakhu (24) was arrested and charged with shooting Tibbetts.

He appeared in the same court last week. The case against him was postponed to August 29 for a formal bail application.

He was arrested after witnesses identified him and reported the matter to the police.
