Juju supporters march to their own tune

2012-03-07 09:19

A group of marchers abandoned the Cosatu march in the Johannesburg CBD this morning to trail expelled ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema.

This happened after Malema appeared at the corner of Rissik and De Korte streets in Braamfontein.

Read a tweet: “Juju arrives and all hell breaks loose, people push past marshals and run to hug him screaming ‘Juju Juju Juju’.”

A uniformed police officer on an nyala (SAPS truck) was using a mounted digital video recorder to watch the marchers’ every move.

Police also recorded the youth league’s violent march outside Luthuli House in downtown Johannesburg after Malema and other leaders were charged last year.

Meanwhile, in Durban, several thousand marchers gathered at King Dinizulu Square near Warwick Avenue this morning.

Most businesses were still open, while taxis added ‘imarch’ to their list of stops. There was a massive police presence, but the mood among marchers was jovial.
