Junk Mail ordered to dump ‘free credit’ ads

2014-06-11 13:37

Junk Mail Publishing has been criticised for publishing adverts with phrases like “blacklisted ... we can help”.

“Junk Mail published adverts with statements such as ‘blacklisted clients welcome, blacklisted ... we can help’,” said National Credit Regulator CEO Nomsa Motshegare.

“In terms of the [act], these statements or phrases should not be contained in the advertisements.”

Junk Mail was issued a compliance notice as the advertisements contravened the National Credit Act.

Junk Mail Publishing is the publisher of the Auto Mart car magazine.

The notice required Junk Mail to stop accepting such advertisements for publication, reviewing all advertisements before publishing and submitting its next version of the magazine with corrected advertisements to the NCR.

Motshegare said Junk Mail had agreed to comply.

Other phrases that were not accepted were “no credit checks required” and “free credit”.
