KZN education department to charge 22 teachers

2013-08-20 11:34

The KwaZulu-Natal department of education plans to bring charges against 22 teachers of a school in Ndwedwe, northwest of Tongaat, for bringing the department into disrepute after failing to attend classes yesterday.

The teachers are believed to be acting in solidarity with a suspended principal.

The principal was suspended for the alleged mismanagement of hundreds of thousand of rands. However, she continued to go to school despite being served with a suspension letter.

She then allegedly held an illegal meeting with the teachers on Sunday, inciting them to down tools.

As a result, no learning took place at Lihlithemba Technical School yesterday.

Today, the department warned that if these teachers were not back in class this morning, they would face disciplinary charges.

Earlier this month, learning was also affected when pupils staged a protest against the principal’s suspension.

Police were called to monitor the situation after a few pupils allegedly vandalised the school, blocked the gate and prevented those pupils who wanted to get to class from passing.

The striking pupils had claimed that the principal’s suspension was as a result of other teachers who had reported her to the department for the ill-treatment of teachers.

She is alleged to shout and swear at teachers as if addressing children.

Head of department Nkosinathi Sishi has gone to the school this morning to ensure that there are no further disruptions.

The principal could not immediately be reached for comment.
