The KwaZulu-Natal government placed adverts in at least two Durban newspapers today urging locals to stop their attacks on foreigners.

The adverts were both in English and isiZulu.

In the English-language Mercury newspaper, the quarter page advert headlined “STOP XENOPHOBIA” carried a picture of Premier Senzo Mchunu and appears on page three of the morning daily.

The same advert also appeared in isiZulu in the Isolezwe, the largest circulating Zulu-language daily in the province, headlined: “SIKHUZA UKUCWASWA KWABOKUFIKA NODLAME (We want you to stop the attacks on foreigners)”.

The adverts appealed for calm and respect for human life and property.

“The KwaZulu-Natal government notes with deep concern and regret the outbreak of violence directed to (sic) foreign nationals in and around Durban.”

The advert went on further to remind readers that the South African constitution not only guarantees the right to life to South Africans, but also to foreign nationals residing within the country’s borders.

It also acknowledged the social and economic challenges faced by residents in Durban and the government’s determination to address them.

The Mercury has a circulation of 25 000 to 30 000 copies daily, while Isolezwe’s circulation is more than 100 000 copies a day.
