KZN needs audit of RDP houses – premier

2014-02-20 17:22

An audit of KwaZulu-Natal’s reconstruction and development (RDP) houses is sorely needed, says KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu.

Mchunu, who was addressing delegates at the start of a two-day lekgotla, said today he believed people owned three or four RDP houses.

He said people even boasted that they owned these houses and the amount of money they made from renting them out.

Mchunu did not say how widespread the problem was, but that “it was not hidden”.

He said that at a funeral he attended, a woman described how she bought and renovated RDP houses, then rented them out at a premium,

Mchunu also said that in line with providing housing, the province needed to eradicate slums and prevent new ones from being established.

“Slums need to be totally eliminated,” he said.

He warned that if service delivery was not improved rapidly, “the alternative is too diabolical to contemplate”.
