Kallis, Petersen hammer Sri Lanka

Jacques Kallis and Alviro Petersen have steered the Proteas to a commanding position on the first day of the third Test at Newlands.

After making a “pair” in Durban, Kallis celebrated his 150th Test by scoring an unbeaten century before tea in the third and final Test against Sri Lanka at Newlands today.

His 100 came off 114 balls and included 17 boundaries.

It was Kallis’s 41st Test hundred but his first against Sri Lanka. He has now scored a century against all nine Test playing nations.

Celebrating his return to Test cricket, Alviro Petersen was unbeaten on an agonising 99 at tea as the pair combined to set a new third-wicket record for South Africa against Sri Lanka.

They shared an unbeaten 180-run partnership, as they steered South Africa to 236 for two at the end of the session.

The previous mark for the partnership record against the visitors was 140 runs, set by Herschelle Gibbs and Kallis in 2004.

Dhammika Prasad, coming into the side to replace the injured Dilhara Fernando, took the early wickets of Graeme Smith (16), with his first delivery, and Hashim Amla (16) before lunch.

Kallis was lucky to survive several short balls early in his innings but then he and Petersen tore into the Sri Lankan attack.

The run rate slowed to 4.4 just before tea but had been hovering around the five-run mark for most of the session which was completely dominated by the batsmen.
