Kenny Kunene on poverty, sushi and the end of Zar.

The end of Zar
“The club was never a source of income for us. If that building wasn’t being renovated, we’d still be there. In fact, we were bought out of that deal for millions because we were still within the contract. Zar was only meant to be a place of entertainment where we create jobs and a platform to network.”

On poverty
“Poor people don’t think about their poverty. They think about success, wealth and riches. I was poor myself and never discussed it. We talked about the houses and cars we want to own when we get rich. Rich people are the ones who discuss it and appoint themselves the spokespeople of the poor. It’s the ones in the middle who have more resentment because they believe just because I’m an ex-con, I don’t deserve the success.”

On his new Dj-ing gig
“Some people buy a soccer team or play gold once they’re financially comfortable. I’ve always loved DJ-ing and entertaining people. Unfortunately, passions don’t make money. I’m fortunate that now that I’m comfortable, I can continue with it through my record label New Money Records. In my first compilation, ZAR Sushi Mix, I included tracks by young, upcoming house producers. There’s a song on I sing with Big Nuz, Fisherman and L’Vovo. Fistaz Mixwell is the executive producer.”

Twitter ‘haters’
“You always have haters and on Twitter, there are always those who think they can just say things and get away with them. Unfortunately for them, I respond and usually not nicely. But that’s just me, I prefer to be real.”

Sushi parties
“I’ll never stop throwing sushi parties and eating them off models. It’s what I do. It’s what my fans want to see.”
