Key ANC lekgotla underway

2011-07-16 08:51

An ANC national executive committee lekgotla was under way today which will influence the government’s mid-term budget later this year.

“The lekgotla does one thing in the main, it deals with leadership from the centre which is the ANC,” said ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe at the meeting venue in Irene, Pretoria.

“That report from the lekgotla will influence the Cabinet’s lekgotla next week and ultimately be fed into the budget process so that when you get the mid-term budget, it must reflect the programme of the ANC as the governing party.

“And that’s why we took the lekgotla from January to July so that it is before the mid-term budget. Now we want to influence the budget right from the beginning.”

The lekgotla received reports on higher education, health, public service and monitoring and evaluation, basic education, infrastructure and safety and security, dealing with crime and corruption.

The meeting was due to break into commissions to discuss the presentations today and then reconvene tomorrow to receive feedback from the commissions.

The lekgotla was attended by cabinet ministers, senior government officials and leaders of the ANC’s alliance partners – the SA Communist Party, the Congress of SA Trade Unions and the SA National Civics Organisation.

A media briefing on the outcomes of the lekgotla would be held early next week.
