Khanyi Mbau’s biography flies off shelves

2012-09-01 11:19

Love her or hate her, Khanyi Mbau knows how to get the public excited.

The high demand for her biography by City Press 7 editor Lesly Mofokeng titled Bitch Please, I’m Khanyi Mbau! bears testimony to this.

The book has been selling like fat cakes since it hit the shelves about three weeks ago across the country.

A copy of the book was even stolen from Exclusive Books in Nelson Mandela Square where all 40 copies in stock were sold in 20 days.

Just across the road, in another Exclusive Books store in Sandton City, 40 copies were sold out in 25 days.

Meanwhile in Rosebank, the book reached number five on the bestsellers’ list last week.

A staff member at the store admitted he never expected the book to sell at this rate “given the negative publicity that has surrounded Mbau’s fame”.

“Very few books can sell this much in two weeks,” he said.

“It’s believed that black people do not read but this proves otherwise.”

CNA has also seen a high demand.

Ronnie Valashiya, retail manager at the Sandton branch, showed City Press figures revealing that over 200 copies were sold in their branches throughout the country over the last two weeks.

Valashiya said his branch only received their order of the book on Wednesday and that customers have been upset with them for not having it earlier.

The biography is currently the number 10 bestseller on Exclusive Books’ national sales figures.
