Khuli Chana investigated for attempted murder

Police were investigating a case of attempted murder against rap singer Khuli Chana, Gauteng police have said.

Police had obtained CCTV footage and statements from witnesses as to what transpired on Monday, Brigadier Neville Malila said.

“The evidence obtained corroborates the claim of police officers at the scene, that instead of (stopping), the driver of the BMW tried to run over the uniform police officers who flagged him down to stop.”

The case against Chana, whose real name is Khulane Morule, was opened on Friday.

“All statements and evidence will be obtained and presented to the director of public prosecutions (DPP) for a decision,” said Malila.

“The attempted murder case where Morule is the complainant is under investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).”

Chana was accidentally shot and wounded by police at the Caltex garage along the N1 highway in Midrand on Monday.

Police mistook his luxury vehicle to be that of the kidnappers whom they were tracking.

Police from Bedfordview, east of Joburg, were tracking the kidnappers and mistook Chana’s car for that of the kidnappers.

A police officer arrested in connection with the kidnapping appeared in the Germiston Regional Court on Wednesday.

Enoch Motsepe, a detective from Silverton, Pretoria, appeared briefly.

The case was postponed to November 11 for further investigation and a formal bail application.

Motsepe is already facing a theft charge in a separate case, the court heard.

Police were looking for five other people in connection with the crime, which took place on Sunday.

They kidnapped a man and demanded a R100 000 ransom from his family.

Motsepe was arrested on Monday after collecting the ransom money.

The victim’s family had been instructed to leave the ransom money at the Caltex garage on the N1 highway in Midrand.

Bedfordview police arrived at the garage, saw Chana’s car and apparently mistook him for the kidnapper. Joburg daily, The Star, reported that Chana tried to run over police officers who tried to stop him at a roadblock at the petrol station.

Chana has been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home, his publicist Sheila Afari said.

Motsepe remained in police custody.
