Khune’s absence headache for Chiefs coach

2013-04-25 13:09

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has not decided who would be between the posts when his team takes on Platinum Stars on Sunday.

With number one and captain Itumeleng Khune suspended for this top-of-the-log clash, Baxter had earlier hinted that young Brilliant Khuzwayo would man the post. But he sang a different tune this morning.

He said he was still applying his mind and, with goalkeeper coach Rainer Dinkelacker, would decide who, between Khuzwayo and veteran Arthur Bartman, would get the nod.

But Baxter was confident that whoever would be picked would do a good job.

Baxter conceded it was a blow not to have Khune, as he had been outstanding for the whole season and the team would miss him.

“He has been our top performer and it is a huge blow not to have him for this crucial game. But it is an opportunity for other goalkeepers to prove themselves,” said Baxter.

He said he was expecting a tough encounter from Stars, who are the only side to have taken three points from Chiefs this season.

“It is not a grudge game for us, although some people would want us to see that way. We will go there and play our normal game with the aim of getting all three points. We don’t see it as a must-win for us because there are still more games to play.”

But Chiefs have a chance of winning the championship with a victory over Stars, if Pirates fail to beat Bidvest Wits on Saturday.
