Komphela’s under-23 flop blackens his record

2012-06-09 20:21

Steve Komphela’s name has been bandied about for the top job – coaching Bafana Bafana.

Komphela was this week installed as a caretaker coach for two games against Botswana (yesterday) and Gabon on Friday, and if Bafana fare well they might give his chances a boost.

Komphela has done wonders at Free State Stars, transforming the team into a well-oiled machine while working with mostly unknown players.

Stars would have finished higher on the log if they had not been on the receiving end of some shoddy refereeing that cost them points they could have easily claimed in the first part of the season.

Last month Komphela was roped in as Bafana’s assistant coach, the same position he has held twice before – under Carlos Queiroz and Stuart Baxter.

The former Bafana captain is a philosopher who is able to inspire and motivate players and can relate to almost
all types of footballers.

But his detractors believe he has not proven himself in the highest echelon and needs to grow a bit more at club level.

However, the fact that Komphela never succeeded as coach of the national under-23 squad and failed to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games will always haunt him as it is a dampener on all the good things he has achieved since.

If he can coach as well as he talks, Komphela has a good chance of landing the job.
