Kuwaiti lawmakers demand ‘eviction’ of Syrian envoy

2011-11-16 10:59

Cairo – Kuwaiti lawmakers are demanding the expulsion of Syria’s ambassador, in compliance with a call from the Arab League, parliamentarian Jaman al-Harbash said today.

Around 33 of parliaments 49 members supported the move, he said.

“With this rise in the number of deputies demanding the Syrian ambassador’s eviction and recalling Kuwaiti diplomats from Damascus, the government should listen to us,” al-Harbash told the broadcaster Al Arabiya.

The 22-member Arab League on Saturday decided to bar Syria from attending its meetings until Damascus complies with an Arab plan to end the months-long violent crackdown on anti-government protesters.

The organisation also called the Arab countries to recall its envoys to Syria.

The Kuwaiti lawmaker also cited security reports alleging that the Syrian government plans to jeopardize Kuwait’s security in retaliation for what he called the Gulf country’s support for an uprising against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad.

Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain have already recalled their ambassadors in Syria.
