Leadership quotas under the spotlight

2009-10-29 10:06

FORMER ANC Women’s League president Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has

challenged African women to take up leadership positions and not allow men to

make decisions on their behalf.

She was speaking at the Women in Politics Conference being held at

the Indaba Hotel in Johannesburg.

More than 250 women representing more than 10 African states are

attending the three-day event.

Zimbabwe’s Vice-President Joyce Mujuru encouraged the women to run

for leadership positions within their political parties and not be relegated to

members of parliament and deputy ministers. She questioned why President Ellen

Johson-Sirleaf of Liberia was the only woman president in Africa.

Mujuru commended South Africa for its 50/50 quota policy aimed at

promoting women into leadership positions and revealed that last week Zimbabwe

adopted its own 50/50 policy for representation in parliament.

Ministers from Tanzania, Malawi, Botswana, Lesotho and Kenya will

be speaking at the conference.

The women will also meet and strategise on promoting the 50/50

quota for women in top positions.
