Legal marches turn vengeful

2012-08-11 16:31

Free State has seen the second highest number of service delivery protests this year. Of the 44 protests which took place there, 31 became violent.

But provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thandi Mbambo said these were legal marches, and police intervened in several violent protests which “erupted without notification”.

The Free State ANC said this week most protests were politically motivated and were targeting the newly-elected provincial leadership.

William Bulwane, the ANC provincial secretary, said: “Some protests are innocent and some are man-made against the provincial leadership.

“In Setsoto, the municipal manager explained to us he had a meeting with the community of Marquard to explain the water shortage.

“The community agreed water will be delivered in containers,” he said, adding that the community protested against the containers later.

“We are clearly dealing here with political issues,” he said.
