After months of speculation and secret auditions spanning over two years, Lerato Kganyago has been unveiled as the latest addition to South Africa’s second biggest soapie, Muvhango.

The rumour that was the talk of tabloids and social media over the past weekend has been confirmed by the producers, who issued a press release today.

She joins the 18-year-old soapie in the role of Mmasebotsane, a girl producers describe as an “epitome of beauty… a timid girl whose life revolves around making everyone around her happy”.

But those itching to see Kganyago in front of the cameras will have to wait until she makes her onscreen debut in the first week of June 2015.

Also described as well-spoken and fierce, it remains to be seen if the versatile entertainer has enough acting talent to justify her inclusion on the soapie, having started as a beauty queen.

Her modelling titles include being crowned Miss Jam Alley 2002. She was a Miss City Press finalist in 2005 and that was followed by a Miss Soweto crown in 2005.

2015 has proven to be Kganyago’s biggest year yet. She has just joined Metro FM as weekend show co-host alongside William Lahong in the 12pm to 3pm slot. The jury is still out on her performance behind the radio mic, as she did her first radio gig this past weekend.

There are those who think Kganyago had it easy because of her fame. But she recently revealed that it took her more than three years to finally convince station managers that she had the voice and the talent to be on radio, having submitted her demos and being rejected by various radio stations on more than one occasion in the past three years.

Though her contract with the soapie is said to be limited, the creators say Kganyago brings with her a “wealth of experience”, and they hope viewers will warm up to her charisma and personality on screen.

A prepared press release from Muvhango quoted its publicist Lebo Malete as saying: “Muvhango has been leading the pack with juicy storylines, surprises and plot twist over the past few years. As we evolve the story allows for new characters like Masebotsane. After doing a round of auditions, we felt that Lerato perfectly fitted the bill to play the role of Mmasebotsane.”
