Lest we forget other heroes

The majority of South Africans will unanimously agree that the ANC played a crucial role during the liberation struggle, surpassing other liberation movements.

However, it wouldn’t have attained this freedom without the help of other movements and individuals who also played a pivotal part.

The governing ANC has in post-apartheid society embarked on the name-changing exercise to reflect the new and democratic society that emerged after 1994 elections. Politically, this is correct.

The problem, however, is that the party is honouring only those heroes and heroines that were part of its liberation struggle.

What about heroes and heroines from the United Democratic Front (UDF), the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC), Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) and other individuals who weren’t part of an organisation or liberation movements during the struggle years?

Their contribution to our new political dispensation should be adequately recognised.

Some of us would be glad if our children could one day go to the Steve Biko University, walk on Strini Moodley Street, board a plane at Robert Sobukwe airport or study music at the Archie Gumede Academy.

The ANC knows that it fought for liberation alongside the PAC, the UDF, the BCM and many other movements during the dark days.

Individuals from these liberation movements should also be recognised and be honoured.
