Licence scam probe under way

2011-10-20 14:23

A probe into the sale of fake driver’s licences, which implicated government officials, was under way, said Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele.

“We are dealing with a very serious problem,” Ndebele said.

The Star reported this week that licences were for sale for as little as R800.

Ndebele said it was “embarrassing” that government officials were involved, but arrests were imminent.

Over 2 000 licences had been cancelled in Gauteng over irregularities so far.

People caught with illegally obtained and fake licences were part of “collusion to murder”, he said.
