Life is hard under the ANC

2011-04-06 07:00

I’ve recently noted a friend’s Facebook status. It read: “Whenever someone says ‘life is hard’, I am always tempted to ask ‘compared to what?!’”Well, I beg to differ.

Life is and can be harder, compared to who we are, what we believe in, our upbringing, our view point on certain things and even experiences we had.

At the age of five, I made the mistake of trying to burn off a piece of stitching that came loose on my vest.

I simply did it because I saw my parents do it with great success.

As a result, I have a burn mark on my stomach. It looks as if I ate a warm pie without chewing it.

My nervous system was also affected, which lead to me developing a stutter.

Stuttering affects approximately 1% of the adult population and the cause of the speech impediment varies from individual to individual.

But stuttering may have a significant negative cognitive and affective impact on the stutterer.

Feelings of embarrassment, shame, frustration, fear, anger, and guilt are frequent in stutterers.

Oral presentations left me mortified, to say the least.

With the help of a mentor, a farther figure and prominent preacher, Roger Petersen, I overcame my stutter.

During my final year at primary school, I was elected to serve as a student representative on the governing body, eight meetings later and I still didn’t say or make a comment in one meeting.

I also suggested to my Grade 9 school teacher that I will opt for a zero during oral.

However, since then, I’ve had the honour of being invited back to my high school to do a presentation, in front of the entire school, and presenting at CPUT on debt and financial matters as the youngest registered Debt Counsellor in South Africa.

During the said presentation, I did not start certain words with a drum roll like before.

So yes, I don’t agree with my friend’s Facebook status in its entirety, mainly because life can be hard, and to continue, it can be harder under the continued rule of the ANC.

Life is harder under the rule of cadre deployment, its harder with maladministration and corruption.

Even if I still had a speech impediment, it would not have mattered in encouraging the youth to vote.

See reasons why the youth should below.» The youth vote is sadly underestimated.

» The biggest election issues often directly affect the youth of the nation.

» The only way democracy works is if citizens, young and old, are active participants.

» If you don’t vote you really have no right to complain about government decisions you don’t like (no matter how much they actually suck).

» Bottom line: You should vote because you can.

It is my conviction that the youth vote could sway the current local government elections in ensuring an equal opportunity society for all, where young and old can experience a better life.

To those who are unhappy in their marriage to the ANC, just this once, cheat on them.

You won’t look back in regret.
