The mother of the five children held captive by their father in Springs for years, says she misses her children terribly, and that her life is hell without them.

According to Afrikaans daily Beeld, the tearful woman did not want to talk about the emotional and physical abuse she and her children had suffered at the hands of her husband, or about her relationship with her husband.

She may not be named in order to protect the identities of her children, aged between 2 and 16. They are being cared for by other family members.

Her husband (36) appeared in the Springs Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, according to Sapa. His case was postponed to June 4 and he will remain in custody.

He is accused of attempted murder, child abuse and obstruction of justice.

According to reports, he allegedly assaulted and tortured his wife and his five children for many years, preventing them from leaving the house or attending school.

The couple’s son (11) escaped the house last Monday, pleading with neighbours to help him. The police were called to the house the following day, and the woman and children were removed.

The woman’s older sister told Beeld that when she saw her husband’s court appearance on television, the enormity of the situation hit her. She apparently wakes up at night, screaming, and is scared to be alone.

The sister said the family just wanted to get the court case over with so that they could live a normal life. This will be difficult as she will have to find work in order to support her family.

The sister added that it was unbearable to see the woman in such a condition, and that people were judging her without knowing about the situation.
