Limpopo mine workers kill one, injure nine

2011-05-27 11:41

One man died and another nine were injured when suspected mine workers attacked a minibus near Lydenburg, Limpopo, police said today.

“The incident took place at approximately 4.30pm yesterday,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Ronel Otto.

“Nine employees from the Smokey Hills Mine at Mecklenburg and a driver were inside the minibus transporting them from the mine back to their place of residence in Lydenburg,” she said.

“It is suspected that the attackers are retrenched workers from the mine.”

She said when the driver saw a group of people blocking the road he tried to make a U-turn but a wheel of the vehicle got stuck in a ditch.

“The driver locked the doors but the mob broke the windows and dragged the driver from his seat and assaulted him,” said Otto.

She said the mob then dragged the passengers out and beat them with sticks and stones before setting the vehicle on fire.

One of the mine workers, Kobus Janse van Rensburg (38), died at the scene. The other nine were taken to Lydenburg Hospital.

One of them was in a serious condition. Two were treated and released.

Otto said no arrests had been made yet but “police are leaving no stone unturned in the investigation and the search for the suspects”.

The mine was not immediately available for comment.
