Lindley farm murder case postponed

2011-02-01 09:16

The trial of five men and a boy accused of killing the Potgieter family on their Free State farm in December last year was postponed in the Lindley Magistrates Court yesterday.

The matter would continue on February 28, police spokesperson Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said.

“The investigation into the murders was completed. It’s suspected that the court would set a date for the trial in the high court.”

Most of the case had been heard in camera, due to the boy’s presence.

Attie Potgieter, his wife Wilma and their three-year-old daughter Willemien were murdered on their farm on Thursday, December 2. Potgieter had been stabbed, his wife and daughter shot.

The murders, especially the girl’s, have led to demands from some quarters for the government to declare farm attacks a priority crime.

Previously, local residents including farmers and the ANC Women’s League protested outside the court.
