Little Women: LA

Lifetime (DStv channel 131)

Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays

In the age of docu-series and reality shows, no topic is out of bounds or taboo – and that’s not all a bad thing. Thanks to the women’s lifestyle channel, Lifetime, we now have a reality show centred on a group of little people.

But don’t dismiss the show as just any other vapid reality mess filled with catfights.

Although it does have those elements, the show has bigger implications. In a society that still stigmatises little people, Little Women: LA works to address the issues these people face on a daily basis. One message becomes very clear, the word ‘midget’ is so offensive it is referred to as the “M-word”.

“Little people” is the accepted term. The show encompasses an educational element, giving the viewer the opportunity to see the world as seen by little people.

Each hour-long episode of Little Women: LA features long-time girlfriends Terra Jole, Tonya Banks, Elena Gant, Christy McGinity, Briana Manson and Traci Harrison. They laugh, cry, compete and fight with one another, but through it all they share a special, unbreakable bond. They might have small bodies but these little ladies are “large and in charge”, complete with big hearts and personalities to match.

From the very first episode, you’ll see them let their freak flags fly, take dirty dancing lessons and strut their stuff in bikinis at a divorce party.
