Live music and jazz at the festival

2010-05-29 06:43

You’ll wish you could clone yourself when you see the treasure

chest of musical riches laid out at the festival.

Blk Sonshine, Louis Mhlanga, Tumi, Steve Newman, Nibs van der Spuy,

Guy Buttery, Karen Zoid, Vusi Mahlasela and many more will be playing at a

variety of venues.

Soweto-born violinist Samson Diamond, 2010 Standard Bank Young

Artist for Music, can be seen in action – there will be Chopin and Shostakovich

programmes as well as gospel and choral fare, and the Cape Town Philharmonic

Orchestra presents a symphony concert under the baton of Richard Cock.

The Standard Bank Jazz Festival, from June 21 to July 3, features

international and local favourites such as Darius Brubeck, Panamanian

pianist/composer Danilo Perez, Dutch trumpet maestro Eric Vloeimans (of

Gatecrash), Judith Sephuma, Oliver Mtukudzi, Marcus Wyatt, Feya Faku, Barney

Rachabane, Marc Duby, Carlo Mombelli and Sibongile Khumalo.

A highlight is always the Standard Bank Jazz Quintet performance,

made up of current and past Young Artist winners, and this year it features 2010

jazz winner Melanie Scholtz on vocals, Mark Fransman on sax and piano, Andile

Yenana on piano, Concord Nkabinde on bass and Kesivan Naidoo on drums – an

explosive combination.
