Lobola is outdated

I totally understand why men used to pay for women in the past. Historically, the majority of women had no financial power and men had to support them.

But why are we still expecting them to do this today?

Women now drive expensive cars, pay their own rent and buy property. Everywhere you look, you see women with jobs, qualifications and their own bank accounts.

These days, parents are asking more than R200?000 for lobola and men can no longer afford it.

A few men even go to loan sharks to pay lobola. Maybe lobola is now irrelevant since women can do it for themselves.

I’ve also observed that today’s women can afford to pay lobola even if the husband-to-be cannot.

We see weddings where the wife has paid for everything in the name of love. Society needs to adapt to the fact that modern women can afford it and are no longer as dependent on men as before.

What worries me more is the increase of single young mothers and absent fathers. This creates bad role models in our society. This is why we have many broken families and many street children. Children need both parents.

To educate a woman is to educate a nation. Statistics show that women are successful in universities and get top jobs.

As men, we would like to say: Happy Women’s Month and Women’s Day to all the outstanding women in South Africa.
