Local Kama Sutra is lekker

When Dr Ilse Groenewald told her female boss she wanted to publish an Afrikaans version of the Kama Sutra, she nearly fell off her chair.

A few months later, Groenewald’s lecturing contract at the university ended and was not renewed.

Although she thinks her raunchy, home-grown Afrikamasutra was to blame for this, Groenewald wasn’t too worried.

Afrikamasutra started life as a website.

It was launched three years ago and Groenewald aimed it at Afrikaans speakers.

“I wanted to create a platform where the Afrikaans community could talk openly about sex without fear of being judged by those who are conservative.”

The Kama Sutra is an ancient Indian Hindu text, which offers written and visual advice to lovers in search of meaningful and magical sex lives.

The website was a hit and Groenewald realised she could be on to something.

Her research revealed that there were very few books about sex available in Afrikaans?– and so the real work began. With the help of three artists, she created a supersultry local version of the ultimate love book.

“We launched it in August and have already sold about 1?000 copies,” says Groenewald, who is surprised by its success.

“I knew there was a niche in the Afrikaans community but this has surpassed my expectations. It’s like people have been waiting for such a book.”

It hasn’t all been plain sailing. A few people have told her she’s contributing to moral decay and one critic called it “curry-flavoured pornography”.

But she says: “I’m not worried about that?...?the book is not only about sexuality but spiritual growth and wealth as well.”
