Local music as lekker as ever

It was a good day for most local musicians who won awards at the Channel O music video awards in Sandton on Friday night.

The live broadcast began with a hip hop showdown featuring AKA, Khuli Chana and three African acts who got the crowds roaring with excitement.

The red carpet was graced by various African acts such as Nigeria’s Darey and Naeto C, Ghana’s Samini, and Ugandan female rapper Keko – who all won awards on the night.

But local acts scooped six gongs, with the biggest one being most gifted video of the year – which went to show-stopping singer and dancer, Zakes Bantwini.

House duo Liquid Deep took most gifted southern video, while rapper AKA won the hip hop video award. Singer Lira took the most gifted female category.

The Afropop award went to Theo Kgosinkwe, and HHP’s collaboration with Teargas and Liquid Deep on the song, Born for This, won best group video.

The highlight of the night was Mozambican singer Lizha James’s performance. She took to the stage with hitmaker Cabo Snoop.

Another singer who had a great reception was Nigeria’s Flavour, who sang his famous hit, Sawa. The song is universal, and guests from all walks of life enjoyed it.

The ceremony also honoured Nigeria’s D’Banj, recently signed to US rapper Kanye West’s recording label, GOOD Music.

He scooped two awards – most gifted male video and a special recognition award.

Speaking from New York in a message broadcast via satellite, D’Banj said he was honoured to be recognised in Africa.

“Life has been busy for me here overseas, but I’m still holding my African flag,” he said.
