Lonmin boss resigns for ‘personal reasons’

Lonmin chief operating officer Johan Viljoen has resigned.

“The board of Lonmin Plc announces the resignation for personal reasons of Johan Viljoen, chief operating officer.

“Ben Moolman, head of our business support office will, with immediate effect, become acting chief operating officer for the time being, alongside his current role,” the company said today.

Moolman rejoined Lonmin in August from Glencore Xstrata where he was chief operating officer of the platinum division.

In his previous time at Lonmin he served in a variety of operational management positions, including vice president of mining.

Lonmin chief executive Ben Magara said: “Ben Moolman is ideally placed to continue the execution of our operational strategy and strategic initiatives, having been intimately involved with the strategy and its implementation as a member of the Lonmin exco.”

Yesterday, Lonmin announced in a statement that Phuti Mahanyele had notified the company of her intention to resign as a non-executive director of the company with effect from June 30.

She joined the board as a non-executive director in April 2013 when she was nominated to the board pursuant to a contractual arrangement with the Shanduka Group, the company’s black economic empowerment partner.

Her decision to resign from the Lonmin board was a direct consequence of her resignation from Shanduka.
