MDC not planning to take home affairs to court

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) is not planning to take the department of home affairs to court to extend the amnesty deadline for undocumented Zimbabweans in South Africa, the party said today.

“We are working together with home affairs in an effort to give Zimbabweans their correct papers,” spokesperson Sibanengi Dube said.

One of the party’s district chairpersons in the Eastern Cape was quoted in news reports as saying the MDC would ask the courts to order Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to extend the December 31 deadline given to Zimbabweans to regularise their documents.

“We are a ruling party that is part of a government in Zimbabwe, so it is not feasible for us to sue a ministry of another sovereign state.

“We unreservedly apologise to home affairs for the confusion that was caused by the utterances,” he said.

Dube said the district chairperson’s statement was misinterpreted by the media.
