Since 2014 was a particularly great year for South African hip hop, MTV Base decided to draw a line in the sand and convened a roundtable to decide who the kings of the rap game were this year.

MTV base VJ, hip head, and long time presenter of the hip hop show ‘The Full Clip’ on YFM, Sizwe Dhlomo, mediated the discussion between MC and producer Amu, who has been a hip hop stalwart since the ‘90s; Metro FM DJ Naked DJ; YFM afternoon drive DJ and Club 808 TV Presenter Mo Flava; Live Amp TV presenter and ardent hip hop fan Loot Love; record label A&R man Kevin Mdubeki; and dj and MTV Base music scheduler DJ Vigilante.

This crew of hip hop aficionados were joined by rappers Tumi Molekane and Slikour, as well as MTV Base’s music programmer Melanie Triegaard.

Given that hip hop is about more than just lyrical ability, the list was decided based on five categories: impact, lyrics, sales, buzz and style which speak to their influence on fashion and the ‘intangibles’ which looks at the illusive X factor, the thing you can’t quite articulate but makes an MC a dope MC.

So from the top: 10 - 6 of the MTV Base top ten hottest South African MC's for 2014:

10. Maggz

Maggz comes in at number ten after a year of featuring on some of the year’s hottest tracks such as Riky Rick’s Amantombazane remix, Dj Switch’s Party on the Weekend, and L-Tido’s Steve Kekana remix.

9. Kwesta

Mr Cool’s come a long way from the days when he wore nerd glasses. He’s had a year of cementing his worth as an MC with his second album DaKar which delivered hits like Boomshakalaka and Thul’Ujaive, as well as great features on tracks like Crash Car Burn’s Keep Walking and Riky Rick‘s Amantombazane Remix.

8. Da LES

The self proclaimed god of Northern Jozi comes in at number 8 in the year in which he released his well received Mandela Money album which included hits like Heaven featuring AKA and this lists number 10 Maggz. Da Les has a year of great features on tracks such as AKA’s Kontrol and All Eyes on me tracks. He’s also recently gone global as one of the four local personalities selected to represent premier global vodka brand Ciroc Circle.

7. Kid X

Cashtime Life’s Kid X’s outstanding contribution to the year’s monster hit, fellow Cashtime Life K.O’s ‘Caracara’ probably has a lot to do with his place on the list. It’s not the first time he’s made a worthy guest, and is also not his first year out. Kid X is a favourite and has worked with some of the best in the country before the big time this year. He’s also proving that he can hold his own in the skhandi rap space with hits like Pass n Special.

6. Riky Rick

Mr Boss Zonke had a year of hits too. Amantombazane was big and the remix even bigger. His Nafukwa (which came with some controversy) and Boss Zonke have continued a year of being on many a dancefloor, while also being a guest on tracks by Dj Speedsta and Reason.

So who’s sitting at the top of the game? The top 5 in the top hottest MCs for 2014 will be announced tomorrow just after 4pm on MTV Base.
