MaSisulu remembered for her vote

2011-06-09 08:33

When the late Mama Albertina Sisulu cast her special vote at her home in Linden on May 18, she said “I am very proud of you my children.”

She was quoted by Minister of Arts and Culture Paul Mashatile in his speech at one of her memorial services held yesterday at the City Hall in central Johannesburg.

Mashatile continued: “We have been taught by the best. She knows there is something right we are doing and if we continue to do so, she will continue to say so and we shall not let her down.”

The City Hall filled up to capacity as the Sisulu family, ANC members, government officials and members of the public came to give messages of condolence.

ANC Treasurer-general Matthews Phosa echoed Mashatile saying, “We have lost a mother.

If anyone deserved the title of mother of the nation, it is Albertina Sisulu.”

He added: “We will take the lessons we have learnt from her and use them as guiding principles. Women are by definition leaders, and none was more so than Mama Sisulu.”

Members of the family present were Lungi, Ntsiki, Beryl, Sheila, Ziyeke, Zodwa, Pam, Shaka, Thulane and Ginyi.

Representatives from the ANCYL, ANCWL, Cosatu, SACP, Sanco, MKMVA and ANC Veterans all delivered their messages of support and tributes to the late Sisulu.

The ANCWL’s Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko said “Mama Sisulu will remain the embodiment of the women’s struggle.

She led with selflessness and the nation is surely poorer without her.”

Memorial services continue in Gauteng with one tommorow at Regina Mundi Church, Soweto at 11am, the official memorial at Tshwane City Hall, and the vigil starts at 6pm on Friday at the Holy Cross Church, Soweto.

The funeral will be held on Saturday at 8am at Orlando Stadium.
