Mabasa elected medical association chairperson

2009-11-04 14:37

THE South African medical association (Sama) has elected Dr Norman

Mabasa as its chairperson for the next three years.

Mabasa, also the chairperson of the national convention on

Dispensing (NCD), said he would not be resigning from the NCD.

Before his appointment Mabasa was a Sama executive member and also

sat on the Leratong Hospital board in Kagiso, Mogale City. The 49-year-old

Medunsa graduate was also Sama president, an honorary position.

“I feel humbled by the election to this position, which was

uncontested,” he said.

Mabasa counted the looming national health insurance (NHI) as one

of his immediate challenges.

“How long will medical aid survive?” he asked of the impact of the

ruling party’s proposed NHI.

Another contentious matter for Mabasa and the new Sama board will

be the unsettled occupation-specific dispensation for public service

“We might still have another fire coming from somewhere,” Mabasa

He said the shortage of doctors was also another challenge that

needed urgent attention. With vacancy rates of between 30% and 40%, Mabasa said

the country urgently needed to produce more doctors.

“In 1979 the country had 10?000 doctors and this year there are

34?000, this means we’ve only produced 24?000 in 30 years,” he said.

Other new members of Sama’s 14-member board include Dr Jiyana Mbere

as president and vice-chairperson Dr Mark Sonderup.

The human rights, law and ethics committee will be chaired by Dr

Carol Madikiza, the health policy committee by Dr Fazel Randera and the public

sectors doctors committee by Dr Phophi Ramathuba.
