The corridors of the Benoni Magistrates' Court were packed to capacity this morning as family members and friends of Mido Macia anxiously awaited the first court appearance of the eight policemen arrested after Macia had been dragged behind a police van and later died in the holding cells of the Daveyton police station.

Magistrate Samuel Makamu had to ask the court to clear as there were people standing and sitting on the floor.

He said: "I will not proceed with the matter until there is some order in the room."

Macia (27), a Mozambican national, died on Tuesday. His crime was apparently parking his taxi on the wrong side of the road.
