Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane has dismissed speculation that he was considering gunning for the position of Johannesburg mayor in 2016.

“I had a laugh when I heard the question … when I got the call of whether I planned to stand as mayor of Joburg,” he told the Cape Town Press Club today.

Answering a question from the media, he said that he was attached to Joburg, still kept a home there, and had worked hard at campaigning.

“But I love the work we do at Parliament. These next five years are a crucial time at Parliament. How people work with one another in the precinct will determine the long-term trajectory of the country. I want to be part of this. That is my focus for now.”

Maimane said the process of finding a suitable candidate for the position would begin in February or March next year.

His reply led to a follow-up question of whether he could simply confirm or deny the report with a yes or a no, to which he replied: “No.”

A report in City Press and Rapport said that Maimane was considering throwing his hat in the ring as the party’s mayoral candidate for Joburg in 2016.
