Maimane set to give DA elections a go

2012-10-13 14:01

DA spokesperson Mmusi Maimane will contest his first election within the DA in November when he runs for one of the party’s three deputy chairperson positions.

Two campaigners for Maimane have confirmed to City Press that he will be nominated for the position by the close of nominations on Monday.

He is set to be backed by DA federal chairperson Wilmot James, who has confirmed that he will be running for the position again.

Maimane was also approached by former DA parliamentary leader, now a backbencher, Athol Trollip, but he has apparently snubbed him.

Trollip has so far refused to speak about who he backs, but did confirm that he was still thinking about whether he would run for a position.

He was rumoured to have been considering challenging James Selfe for his position as chairperson of the DA’s federal council.

Other names mentioned for the three positions of deputy federal chair include Western Cape MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela, who has been nominated by newly-elected DA Western Cape leader Ivan Meyer and Johannesburg councillor Makhashule Gana, who was nominated by Gauteng DA leader John Moodey.

DA MP Anchen Dreyer has confirmed to City Press that she will stand again and fellow MP Dianne Kohler Barnard is also said to have made herself available for the position.

The DA is set to elect its national leaders at its national congress at the end of November in Boksburg.
