Makabu ‘ready to rumble’ in the Danger Zone

Cruiserweight sensation Ilunga “Jr” Makabu has promised to teach Gogita Godziladze “what boxing is” in their pursuit of the International Boxing Federation (IBF) cruiserweight youth title tonight.

“I am a KO (knock out) specialist, this is Africa, it’s a big and brutal jungle and no one comes into this jungle and do as they please,” Makabu warned his challenger, Gogita Gorgiladze, yesterday.

The Danger Zone boxing event is held tonight at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park.

Makabu has no reason to be complacent though because Gorgiladze is undefeated in 12 professional fights, while Junior has one loss to his name in as many fights.

Said Gorgiladze (19): “I’m here to collect a win, without saying a lot I will let my skills do the talking in the ring.”

All 12 boxers featured in the six-bout bill stepped onto the scale earlier this week.

Javier Corrales from Paraguay surprised many by losing more than 5kg between Tuesday and Friday – from 100kg in the preliminary weigh-in to 94.65kg.

The weight limit for his international catchweight contest with local boy Kevin “KO Kid” Lerena is 95kg and many pundits ruled out Corrales after he had failed to make the limit but it is now official he will be fighting tomorrow.

Lerena weighs about a kilogram less than his opponent, at 93.75kg. The other boxers easily made the required weight limits.

The first fight will start at 07.30pm today.
