Making my X in Sterk

2014-05-08 08:55

Team City Press was out in full force on election day. Lubabalo Ngcukana was stationed in Sterkspruit, Eastern Cape – a hot spot because of service-delivery protests. Here are his impressions.

At first I was anxious that I might not be able to vote because I was not voting at my voting station in Ngangelizwe where I am registered.

But when the IEC officials at the city hall voting station said I could vote, I was excited.

It was special because Sterk – as it is affectionately known – is a hot spot. It felt as if I was making a difference – not only in my country, but also at Sterk.

The people in Sterk are warm and friendly – in contrast to what we have become accustomed to, given the recent violent service-delivery protests there.

I voted just before 9am, taking advantage of the small queues.

I found the IEC officials to be professional people and very helpful.

It was a proud moment for me as I marked that very important X.

The rest is history.
