Makoe back to his familiar ‘hood’, jail

FORMER gangster Israel Makoe, who landed roles in the Oscar-winning

film Tsotsi and the popular TV drama series Yizo Yizo has been arrested for

robbing three people of their cellphones and R500 in ­Orange Grove,


Captain Phillip Maganedisa said Makoe (known as GP ma Orange) and

his two accomplices, one of whom was also in the entertainment industry as a

backup dancer, were arrested after a high speed chase on Friday night.

Makoe also landed roles in SABC programmes Isidingo and


Maganedisa said the trio were driving in a blue VW minibus at about

9pm when they pulled up next to two men and a woman on Friday and robbed them. A

­police patrol vehicle came past and the three fled. That was when the ­police

gave chase.

“They were stopped a couple of streets away. The stolen cellphones

and the money were found in their possession.”

Maganedisa confirmed that the three were charged with common

assault and robbery.

According to entertainment website TVSA, Makoe was involved in

crime from 1988 until 1994. He was arrested for the first time at 14 for

housebreaking and theft. In 1996 he was sentenced to eight years in prison.

While serving his jail term, he decided to form a theatre group called Abaqobi

Drama Group and discovered his love for acting. After his release in 1999 he

landed a role as a prison gang leader in Yizo Yizo.

He also ended up recording a soundtrack with Mandoza.

Makoe was also involved in ­community building – motivating the

youth. He featured in music videos, documentaries and plays and is also a

director for the Alexandra theatre group Ishoshovi.
