Malema leads league NEC meeting

2011-11-12 12:19

Suspended ANC Youth League president Julius Malema led the league’s national executive committee (NEC) meeting in Benoni today.

Malema – who has been suspended for five years after the ANC’s national disciplinary committee found him guilty of bringing the party into disrepute – danced and sang alongside his fellow comrades.

“No matter how difficult, we are going to Mangaung, even when they suspend us,” NEC members sang in isiZulu.

The closed meeting was believed to have been called to discuss the league’s reaction to the suspension of Malema.

During a brief photo opportunity members of the NEC outlined their intentions at next year’s Manguang conference in song .

“2012 siVota Mbalula, siVota Kgalema” they sang.

The league wants Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula to replace Gwede Mantashe as the ANC’s secretary-general.

They also want Deputy President Kgalema Mothanthe to be elected president of the ANC.

Mbalula is a former president of the youth league.

Malema, the youth league’s deputy president Ronald Lamola, treasurer-general Pule Mabe, secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa and deputy secretary-general Kenetswe Mosenogi were charged for bringing the party into disrepute.

This was after saying earlier this year that the youth league would send a team to Botswana to consolidate local opposition parties and help bring about regime change there.

Malema later apologised for the remarks, but they were widely believed to have caused serious diplomatic embarrassment for the ANC.
