Mamabolo launches Bekkersdal turn-around projects

2014-11-15 12:05

The first three projects of a turn-around plan in Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg, would be launched today, said Gauteng housing MEC Jacob Mamabolo's office.

"The township was declared a hot-spot and most public facilities were torched during the 2014 pre-election protest actions over service delivery and demands for the disbandment of the municipality," his office said today.

The Bekkersdal Service Delivery Improvement Plan would upgrade infrastructure, and improve social and economic conditions.

The first three projects to be launched today were a sewer network upgrade, a high impact cleaning campaign and a secondary school. The sewer upgrade alone would cost over R300 million.

According to the department, the pre-election protests in Bekkersdal caused around R20m in damages.

This included the destruction of the community hall, gymnasium, council offices, business hub, clinic, local business training centre and farmer support centre.
