Comrades Marathon champion Ludwick Mamabolo has tested positive for a banned substance.

Dr Shuaib Manjra, chairperson of the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport, has confirmed that the Limpopo-born runner was caught with the stimulant Methylhexanamine in his system.

“Methylhexanamine is a banned stimulant that assists in overcoming fatigue and helps an athlete to run faster,” he said.

Manjra said Mamabolo has been informed about the drug test, but there has been no response from him.

Sanctions for users caught with the stimulant range from a warning to two years.

Manjra said the 35-year-old could lose his title and the prize money.

“He can request a B-sample, but if that is found to be positive as well, he will be face a hearing,” Manjra added.
