A 45-year-old man will appear in the Lydenburg Magistrates Court today for allegedly defrauding the Thaba Chweu Municipality in Mpumalanga of about R7.5 million.

National police spokesperson Colonel Vishnu Naidoo said that three cases of fraud and theft were opened against Abdool Gani Kalla in May this year.

He was “tracked down” and arrested at his house in Polokwane last week.

Kalla who sold electricity vouchers on behalf of the municipality to the community of Mashishing apparently failed to deposit R7.5 million into the municipality’s account for the vouchers.
