A 28-year-old man, angered by his girlfriend, was caught driving at 224km/h on the N1 near the Grasmere Toll Plaza.

“He told officers that he was angry at his girlfriend and put the foot down on the accelerator. The girlfriend was next to him in the black BMW M3,” said metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

He said the man from Lenasia was arrested at 2am and was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Minnaar said six more drivers were arrested on the N1 for driving at more than 160km/h in a 120km/h zone.

They were also expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
