Man killed in taxi crash

2010-12-20 14:53

A man was killed and 13 injured, five seriously, when a minibus crashed into the back of an SA Roadlink bus parked on the side of the N1 near Ventersburg, early today, Free State police said.

“There were 12 in the kombi. One died, and the other 11 were taken to hospital,” said Sergeant Puleng Motsoeneng.

They were travelling from Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape to Johannesburg when the crash occurred around 2am.

Motsoeneng said the bus had pulled over on the side of the road, and the minibus driver may not have seen it.

The bus company attributed the accident to irresponsible driving and driver fatigue.

The bus was on its way from East London to Johannesburg for technical repairs when the driver had to pull over for a running repair.

“As per our strategy of safety and technical responsibility, SA Roadlink found that the coach needed mechanical attention,” Roadlink’s business development manager Karl Stark said.

The bus was parked on the side of the road outside Ventersdorp, when the taxi ploughed into the back of it.

The driver’s assistant was among the injured. The driver initially said he was fine, but later also needed treatment.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said that when their paramedics arrived on the scene they found five people trapped in the mangled wreckage of the taxi which was wedged against the bus.

“With the assistance of the firefighters and rescue technicians, the injured were cut free from the wreckage while medics worked fervently to stabilise them,” he said.

They were all transferred to hospitals and clinics in Bloemfontein, Winburg and Welkom.?
