A 73-year-old man was stabbed to death, allegedly by a boy trying to rape his niece near Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said today.

The man heard his 44-year-old niece screaming for help from her room on Tuesday at 6pm and ran to her rescue, Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said in a statement.

He allegedly found a 16-year-old local boy trying to rape her and scared him away.

The intruder returned a short while later and allegedly stabbed the old man. He died on the scene.

The teenager was arrested at his home a few hours later. He was expected to face a murder charge in the Ngqeleni Magistrates Court on Friday.
