A man allegedly fired shots at police officers outside a hospital

in Atlantis, Cape Town, after being spotted by a person claiming to have been

robbed by him.

The officers were escorting a 22-year-old man, who had been shot in

the leg during a robbery, to Wesfleur hospital when he spotted his alleged

robber near the hospital, captain Cyril Dicks said.

Police and security guards at the hospital gave chase on foot and

the 26-year-old man fired several shots at them.

Police fired a shot back and wounded the man in the stomach and he

fell to the ground.

A 7.65 pistol was found in his possession and he was sent to

Sommerset hospital under police guard.

Tests on the pistol revealed that it had been used in another

shooting in Edinburgh Place.
