Former president Nelson Mandela’s longtime friend George Bizos, SC, has refrained from visiting the critically ill Nobel laureate in hospital in Pretoria.

Bizos told The Star he received a phone call from Mandela’s wife Graça Machel on Saturday.

“She told me that he was not very good, and I accept that,” he said.

Bizos said he had refrained from visiting the 94-year-old statesman in hospital, the newspaper reported today.

“I have respected the doctor’s wishes of not allowing in too many visitors,” he said.

“None of us are immortal. We must let him live as long as possible.”

On June 8, Mandela was admitted to the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital, in Pretoria, for treatment of a recurring lung infection.

On Sunday night, presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in a statement that Mandela’s condition had turned critical.

Bizos told The Star he last saw Mandela about a month ago.

“He was reasonably well. He recognised me and we talked about the old days.”
