Mandela ‘Rumble on the Rock’ boxing tribute announced

A boxing tribute in honour of Nelson Mandela will take place on March 2 2013 in Cape Town.

Showpony Promotions announced today that the “Rumble on The Rock” tournament will feature a much anticipated main bout between International Boxing Organisation (IBO) welterweight champion Chris “The Heat” van Heerden against challenger Matthew “Magic” Hatton.

With more than three months to the much-hyped event, van Heerden and Hatton are brimming with confidence.

The UK-born Hatton, who came all the way from Manchester for the announcement, vowed to dethrone Van Heerden.

“I will not come from Europe to South Africa for nothing, he (van Heerden) is a threat but I will stop him,” said Hatton.

The younger brother of former IBO light welterweight Ricky Hatton said he is looking forward to the fight.

“It is going to be a stiff fight and knowing Chris is a great boxer, I will keep an open eye,” he said.

Hatton was accompanied by his father Ray, who pointed out that his son will come “to collect what he should have had three years ago”.

Van Heerden hit back, saying: “I will not let someone come and take what belongs to me because I have worked hard for this (IBO welterweight belt).”

The former SA welterweight champion said that after beating Hatton, older brother Ricky Hatton will be his next target.

“Going to Manchester where many people do not like me to face his brother will be a dream come true,” he said.

Also scheduled to feature in the tournament is the talented African Boxing Union Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu, whose opponent will be announced at a later stage.

Promising local 20-year-old Kevin Lerane will also fight to prove himself in what will be his first big platform. His opponent will also be identified soon.
