Mandela case postponed again

The driver of the car in which former president Nelson Mandela’s great-granddaughter Zenani Mandela was killed appeared briefly in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court today.

Sizwe Mankazana, dressed in a black suit and blue shirt, was told to appear again on December 20 to set down his trial date.

He looked straight ahead as his lawyer, advocate Kenny Oldwage, explained his client would be out of the country on that day.

Magistrate Annamart Alberts noted the fact but warned that the presiding magistrate could issue a warrant for his arrest if he did not appear.

Mankazana was out on bail and faces a charge of culpable homicide. He was driving Zenani Mandela home from the Soccer World Cup concert at Orlando Stadium on June 11 last year when they were involved in a car accident in which she died.

The crash came two days after her 13th birthday.

Mankazana (23) is the son of Zwelakhe Mankazana, the partner of Mandela’s daughter Zenani Mandela-Dlamini.
